| Genre Parody Movies |
[Dec. 16th, 2008|01:06 pm] |
Your suggestions are solicited!
Please add to my list of possible movies for a movie marathon of all genre parody movies! That is, the movie is not only a silly spoof, but also makes fun of an entire class of other movies...
Here are some ideas to get you started:
Shaun of the Dead - Zombie Kung Fu Hustle - Kung Fu Best in Show - Documentary / Big Competition Enchanted - Fairy Tale Hebrew Hammer - Blacksploitation Murder by Death - whodunit Galaxy Quest - Star Trek (might be a bit too specific) Spaceballs - Star Wars (also might be a bit too specific) Mystery Men - superhero The Incredibles - also superhero (kind of a stretch as parody) The Pink Panther - detective
Also encouraged are suggested three or four movie groupings. |

Also, to answer a bar question from tonight,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_(mass)
So my guess of 16 pounds is close to the high end used for some items (14 pounds). 14 pounds is what Google says when you type "1 stone in pounds". Another guess of 6-8 pounds includes the 8 pound value that was also used for some items. So it would be a bad bet, as both guesses are "right". It's also in common British use as equal to 14 pounds when reporting body weight. |

| Apparently, Some Russians Are Not Criminals |
[Jun. 13th, 2007|10:31 am] |
I know, I'm surprised too.
A friend who I haven't seen online in a few months logged on to ICQ this morning. After a while, it became apparent that the reason I couldn't read any responses was that they were written in Cyrillic. (My computer rendered them as: "õóé", "äà ëàäíî?", and "âîò áåäà òàê áåäà..".) And I found myself chatting not with my friend, but a Russian teenage boy who was quite abashed to be using someone else's account!
He said he had gotten the account as a gift. When he realized it was probably someone else's, he was really nice and said he wanted to return it.
[10:08] Russian kid: i'd like to give this number back.. [10:08] Russian kid: i don't want to be a.. a.. a man who steals things..
Then he just went ahead and gave me the password... poor trusting fool :)
[10:15] Russian kid: don't think badly about all russian [10:16] Jeremy: i just think the russian internet is like the wild west... [10:16] Russian kid: oh, you're right.. our country has many hackers
I wonder where you go to get recycled ICQ logins and if they are all hacked or just most of them. I think it's pretty naive to expect that a login you get anywhere but the real site would not be stolen. But maybe there is a legit board where people post their old accounts that they don't want any more.
I did not end our conversation with "I'm blogging this." I did change the password right away and send it back to my friend. :) |

| Need Internets |
[May. 25th, 2007|06:35 pm] |
I am shopping for internet and telephone service for the company I'm working for in Manhattan.
If you also work in Manhattan: - Which ISP do you use? Do they not suck? - Which telephone company do you use? Do they not suck?
Thanks. |

This video is quite amazing:
Many people at my lab at NYU work on simulations that would let you animate graphics of this kind. Seeing the real thing in slow motion is an impressive reminder that even the simulations that look about right are often much simpler than real life. |

| Totally accurate review |
[Mar. 15th, 2007|12:51 am] |
As some of you have heard me ranting in the past, I hate critics. I remember first realizing this years ago when reading the weekly music reviews written by Greg Kot, Tribute Rock Idiot. So many critics think their job is to find new and ever-more erudite ways of showing their disdain for the works they review. Last week's Time Out film reviews section included the word "risible" twice in the same column, by different reviewers. Really, you could have said "laughable." It would be okay.
And yet, I still regularly read the Time Out film and music sections, because I have to have some way of finding out what's going on. I even pay for the privilege. I encountered this totally accurate little gem of a review in last week's Time Out. It is quoted verbatim.
Requiem for a Dream Dir. Darren Aronofsky. 2000. 102mins. Drugs are bad. Do not take drugs. That's what Darren Aronofsky's show-offy parable about substance abuse boils everything down to: Narcotics will fuck you right up, and that is no lie. Incidentally, drugs? Not such a swell idea. Admission is $5. (Don't use drugs!)
Well, totally accurate except for the "show-offy" sniping. Fucking critics. |
